A worthwhile point. Gamification has me making sure I "get my steps" in most days, even when my motivation is flagging, because I feel like garbage if I don't get that message from wrist that my watch thinks I'm a good boy.

Of course, I already have the underlying goal of getting and staying in shape, and the smartwatch is a nudge towards the goal.

Gamification may have limited utility if it is pasted on top of a topic a student really doesn't care about.

Still, finding out if gamification has more than marginal utility in the classroom is certainly worth a rigorous study...as long as its not funded by the companies building the educational gamification software!
